As the first major European league, La Liga has announced an coordinated retro matchday, set to take place in April 2026. Could the idea influence other competitions?
Ligue 1 Takes on La Liga Retro Kit Matchday
La Liga will host its first-ever Retro Matchday from 10-13 April 2026, with clubs wearing kits inspired by historic designs from their past. The initiative involves 38 clubs across the top two divisions. Not every club will participate fully. FC Barcelona, Real Madrid CF, Getafe CF, and Rayo Vallecano will not wear retro kits on the pitch.
Ligue 1's post is promotional only
Meanwhile, Ligue 1 recently posted older images of current players wearing retro kits, but there is no retro matchday planned. The post appears to be promotional only.
Teams such as Manchester United (2008) and Manchester City (2019) have worn simplistic retro kits on single occasions, but the first full retro kit matchday happened in Sweden in 2024.

For now, La Liga remains the first and only of Europe’s top five leagues to organize a full retro-themed round. If the campaign proves successful (it already has in our opinion), other leagues such as the Premier League, Serie A, Ligue 1, or Bundesliga could adopt similar concepts in the future.
