In May, it was announced that Umbro would be taking over England Rugby from Canterbury. Now Umbro released the new England Rugby 2020-21 kits - we compare them to the brand-new Nike England Football 2020-21 kits.
Umbro, despite having a history in rugby, is more famous for being the kit maker of the England national football team. Umbro lost the England FA deal seven years ago to Nike - many traditionalists would like Umbro to return as kit maker of the Three Lions, the England national team - but that is almost impossible as of now (the England Rugby deal is worth a bit more than 5 million GBP / year, compared to Nike's 33 million GBP / year England FA deal.
Nike England Football vs Umbro England Rugby Kits
Home:
The Umbro England Rugby 2020 home kit has a clean design in white and bright red with blue used for the o2 logo. The jersey features a subtle mix of patterns that use scale and repetition to create a subtle graphic effect.
Nike's England 2020 home soccer kit also has a modern look, even though it is inspired by the 1998 kit. England’s Nike football home shirt features a dark blue crew neck and side stripes. Both the collar and the stripes are embossed with the distinctive “community of lions” graphic.
The obviously biggest difference is the crest - England's football kit comes with the famous Three Lions logo, while the England Rugby shirt boasts the famous England Rugby rose.
Umbro's rugby shirt also has a bigger Umbro logo than a football kit - most rugby shirts have such a big manufacturer logo - it is not allowed in soccer.
Away:
Both Nike and Umbro opted for blueish away kits. However, the 'Umbro England Rugby Alternate Jersey' is navy blue with a melange print, while the "Nike England Away Kit" is striking blue with an all-over lions graphic.
The new England 2020 rugby kits are available for 112 Euro in the authentic version, while the replica retails at 78 Euro.
