Burberry Stop Sale Of Newport County 21-22 Hummel Kit, Club Threaten With Legal Action

In early September 2021, English League Two side Newport County released their new third kit in collaboration with Newport rap group GLC. Now The Sun exclusively reports that London fashion house Burberry threatened the club with legal action that forced them to ditch the kit.

Newport County Stop Sale Of 21-22 Third Kit After Burberry Threaten Club With Legal Action

The Sun understands that Burberry almost immediately after the launch wrote to Newport County that they had breached their copyright. Newport, who do not have the money to start a legal dispute against Burberry, had no option other than to pull the kit off their website.

Fans who got their kit were told to return it

Fans who had ordered the shirt were told by County’s kit supplier Hummel they would no longer be receiving the product.

However, Newport County did not officially say that the shirt was removed from sale because of Burberry. Instead, Hummel blame production issues because of Covid-19 in a letter to the fans for the shirt being discontinued.

Hummel Claim "Production Issues" For The Shirt Being Scrapped

The few fans who did receive the 21-22 GLC third shirt in the short time before sales were stopped have even received emails asking if they would return the kit. It is understood the majority of those who own a shirt have declined to do so.

However, Hummel also say that the club will no longer be playing in this shirt during the current season. That also confirms Sun's report.

Newport will never again play in the kit

Hummel’s email to Newport supporters reads: "Unfortunately, due to Covid-related issues within our factories, raw material availability and production issues, we have now been told we will not be receiving our main bulk delivery.

"Sadly, because of this change of circumstances, the club will no longer be receiving their allocation of the Newport County 2021/22 third shirt and unfortunately will no longer be playing in this shirt during the current season. The club will not be using an alternative third kit.

"This is extremely disappointing news for the brand and all Newport AFC fans who were looking forward to seeing the shirt on the pitch."
