Pepsi have released a new promotional video featuring Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi, and they’ve gone for a shirt design from their archives for the reunion.
Ronaldinho Wears Pepsi Kit Based on 20 Year Old Design
The football kit trend of taking inspiration from the past has made its way into the advertising world. In a new video for Pepsi, Ronaldinho wears a two tone blue shirt as he goes up against Messi in a beer pong-like game, but obviously featuring Pepsi instead of beer while allowing the two former Barcelona stars to show off their football skills.
The shirt is clearly inspired by the one used in Pepsi’s ad campaign in the lead up to the 2002 World Cup, but with a modernised logo on the front.
The jersey worn by Ronaldinho is a reference to Pepsi’s golden age of football advertising when they had the likes of Raul, David Beckham, Francesco Totti, Juan Sebastian Veron, Roberto Carlos, Rivaldo, Gianluigi Buffon and Edgar Davids appearing in their big budget tv ads.
With the internet surpassing television as the most effective form of advertising over the last decade or so, unfortunately we’re no longer treated to the extended football ads that we used to see on our screens. Brands undoubtedly release new social media campaigns more often, which are seen by many people, but they just don’t have the same staying power and cultural significance as they did on tv in the 90s and 2000s.
