Nike has created a ultra-lightweight cycling shoe for British sprinter Mark Cavendish based on the Nike Mercurial Superfly 360 soccer cleats. The new Nike Mercurial Superfly 360 for Cavendish draw inspiration from the 1998 Nike Mercurial R9 soccer cleats that Cavendish was a big fan of.
"20 years ago, during France 98, I saw Ronaldo wearing the first Mercurial. Immediately I wanted them. The R9’s. I was always a Nike fan. They did things differently. They weren’t afraid to change what was normal."
“When developing them, we thought surely a boot designed to be light & comfortable for the fastest players in the world has to work for the same purpose on a bike. Thus, the shoe was born.”
Nike Mercurial Superfly 360 Cycling Shoes
The first Nike Mercurial Superfly 360 cycling shoe has a full Flyknit construction, built for pure speed in cycling like it is on the football pitch. The cleats come with a cycling sole plate and a special fastening construction.
The design of the boots is a throwback to the famous Ronaldo R9 boots that Nike created for the 1998 World Cup.
It is not the first time that Mark Cavendish received a cycling shoe with the design of the Nike Mercurial 2018 football boots. However, compared to his new special Nike Mercurial Superfly 360 R9 Flyknit cycling shoe, the orange Nie Mercurial cycling shoes were the same as standard Nike shoes from a tech point of view - they had nothing in common with the Nike Mercurial apart from the design.
