Old Trafford Special Black Corner Flags to Commemorate the Munich Air Disaster
Manchester United are wearing special armbands in tonight's FA Cup match against Middlesbrough to in remembrance of the victims of the Munich air disaster.
The Munich air disaster occurred on February 6, 1958, when an airplane carrying the Manchester United team alongside journalists and supporters crashed when attempting to take off from the ice-covered runway at the old Munich-Riem airport. The team were on their trip back to Manchester following an International Cup away game away to Red Star Belgrade. Only 21 of the 44 people who were on board survived the crash.
The armband commemorating the air disaster is black with a clock design showing the time and date when the plane crashed.
For the 50th anniversary of the tragedy, in 2008, both Manchester United and Manchester City played a match wearing one-off retro kits.
