Update: Supporters of the creation of a super league have won a partial victory in the dispute. The ECJ ruled that Uefa could not prohibit such a competition. A Super League could be legal, even though it's extremely unlikely to ever happen with all the big European clubs in the foreseeable future.
The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) today have ruled that clubs have the right to freely discuss and propose new European competition formats. Following the decision, A22 Sports Management, the Super League's agency, directly announced their new format for a potential new European competition.
First and foremost, it is extremely unlikely that the Super League will happen, with all clubs except Barcelona and Real Madrid having stepped back after fan protests.
The Super League wants 64 teams to compete in 3 divisions - it is their ambition to replace UEFA's current three European Cup tournaments: Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.
The 64 teams would be competing in 3 divisions divided as follows:
- Star League (Division 1): 16 teams (Divided into two groups of 8 teams each)
- Gold League (Division 2): 16 teams (same as 1st place)
- Blue League (3rd place): 32 teams (Divided into 4 groups, each with 8 teams)
- Each team will play 14 matches, including 7 home and 7 away.
- Will include relegation and promotion every season
- Each season is divided into stages: Round robin in the group stage, then play-offs based on rankings to compete for the league championship.
