After the US sportswear giant Nike said it could not supply Iran's players with football boots for the World Cup because of sanctions, the Iran head coach, Carlos Queiroz, has demanded an apology from Nike.
Some of Iran's players have been training in old Nike football boot models and colorways, with ESPN reporting that Iranian players have been asking non-Iranian clubmates to lend them the latest Nike boots from the "Just Do It" collection for the 2018 World Cup, or just buying their own.
“It has been a source of inspiration for us,” Queiroz told Sky Sports. “This last comment of Nike was, in my personal view, an unnecessary statement. Everybody is aware about the sanctions.
“They should come out and apologise because this arrogant conduct against 23 boys is absolutely ridiculous and unnecessary. We are only managers and footballers, and should not get involved in such matters. But we are asking Fifa to help us with this.”
