Adidas have placed the statues on public display in London.
Adidas Unveil Statues of Female Athletes and Activists
Adidas have unveiled a set of statues honouring the achievements of female athletes and activists on London’s South Bank, close to the Tower Bridge.
The statues are green, blue and red in colour and depict the following people:
- Vivianne Miedema (Arsenal footballer)
- Eniola Aluko (sporting director, commentator former footballer)
- Francesca Brown (footballer and CEO of Goals4Girls)
- Ellie Goldstein (dancer and model)
- Emily Scarratt (rugby player)
- Tanya Compas (youth worker and LGBTQ+ activist)
- Asma Elbadawi (basketballer, poet and activist)
- Sherrie Silver (dancer, choreographer, and U.N. advocate)
They are part of a promotion campaign for a new range of sports bras, although Adidas also say they are intended to encourage greater representation of women in London and inspire future changemakers. Only 4% of the statues in London are of women, as opposed to 21% being of men and even animals making up 8%.
The statues are 3D printed using recycled plastics taken from the oceans and were put in place on the 18th of February. They will stay there for two weeks in total before being moved to a permanent home.
This is not the first time that Adidas have used statues as a publicity stunt. In November 2021 they placed seven golden goat statues in front of the Eiffel Tower to celebrate Lionel Messi’s seven Ballon d’Or wins. It’s safe to say that this latest campaign is a bit more dignified.
