Forest Green Rovers, the League Two club famous for its FIFA and UEFA approved 'world's greenest football club' monicker, yesterday revealed the new 19-20 third kit, which is made by PlayerLayer and inspired by and raising vital funds for Sea Shepherd.
Established in 1997, Sea Shepherd’s mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species. They use innovative, direct-action tactics to investigate, document and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas. By safeguarding the biodiversity of delicately balanced ocean ecosystems, Sea Shepherd works to ensure their survival for future generations.
In a first for football, the new FGR hshirts are made from 50% bamboo, which is a fast-growing and more sustainable alternative to cotton, in order to reduce the use of plastic.
Forest Green Rovers 2019-2020 Home Jersey
This is the Forest Green Rovers 2019-2020 home football shirt, made by PlayerLayer.
As chairman Dale Vince had the "desire to create an evolution of the club’s now world-famous green and black hoops", Forest Green Rovers's new 19-20 home jersey boasts a zebra pattern in lime green and black.
FGR's infamous three stars, which are meant to transmit the club's ambition to reach the Championship - the black star represents the promotion to League Two, with two greyed-out ones standing for League One and the Championship - are placed on the upper back of Forest Green Rovers's new 2019-20 home shirt.
The zebra pattern continues onto the upper front part of the shorts, which are otherwise lime green.
Forest Green Rovers 19-20 Away Jersey
This is the new PlayerLayer Forest Green Rovers away football shirt for 19-20.
Forest Green Rovers's 19-20 away shirt features the same pattern as the home, albeit in a much more subtle fashion.
Predominantly black, the logos and collar of Forest Green Rovers's new 2019-2020 away shirt are lime green.
Forest Green Rovers 19-21 Third Kit
The Forest Green Rovers 19-20 third kit is inspired by the razzle dazzle camouflage paint job on Sea Shepherd’s flagship vessel, the Steve Irwin – devised to bamboozle on the high seas.
Forest Green Rovers will be wearing the third kit in cup matches this season – and all proceeds from sales worldwide will go directly to Sea Shepherd.
The new Forest Green Rovers has been also created using kit partner PlayerLayer’s revolutionary 50% bamboo material.
Dale Vince, chairman, Forest Green Rovers, said: “We’ve taken inspiration from nature with our new kit – from the zebra stripes to the sustainable materials. I was pretty shocked when I found out that modern sportswear is actually made from plastic – that feels wrong to me, not just from the sustainability point of view, but for performance too.
“Together with PlayerLayer, we’re making strides towards a new approach for football kit – this year’s 50% Bamboo is a stake in the ground (no pun intended), we plan to move beyond that. The aim is 100% sustainable high-performance material.”
Roderick Bradley, founder of PlayerLayer, commented: “We are privileged to work with such a forward thinking, creative and rebellious football club. We are developing some completely natural fabrics which will change the sports clothing industry forever.”
The new Forest Green Rovers shirts are currently available for pre-order and will ship from July 15th.
