In a way, the second generation of the Hypervenom was overshadowed by the controversy surrounding the redesigned upper, which was deemed as too stiff and requiring too long to break in by many. This was only confirmed when Neymar, the most important player wearing the model, received camouflaged boots - based on the Mercurial but disguised to look like the Hypervenom.

In time for the Euros, Nike corrected the error and reverted to the popular upper of the first generation. The upcoming Nike Hypervenom Phantom III will be the first in the history of the silo to feature a fully knitted upper.
