Update: Borussia Dortmund’s 2025 general assembly set an unwanted record, running almost 14 hours before ending without a decision on the proposed badge change. The vote was meant to address a member request to return to a historic crest used in the 1940s and 1960s, but technical problems in the hybrid voting system prevented the motion from being presented.
When the agenda reached the badge topic shortly before 1 a.m., the applicant could not be connected to speak, and with members visibly exhausted, the decision was postponed entirely. The debate around the club’s identity will now likely continue at a later date, even though nothing is confirmed yet.
Original Story - 20 November 2025: Borussia Dortmund’s upcoming annual general meeting this Sunday could feature an unexpected debate. A club member has officially submitted a proposal to replace the current BVB crest with a modernised version of the design used between 1974–1976 and 1978–1993. The suggested logo features the thicker double-ring outline and slimmer lettering that many supporters still connect with earlier eras of the club’s history.
BVB Member Proposes Return to Classic 1974 Crest
If approved, the updated crest would be registered with the authorities, added to all official club channels and take effect once published in the club’s news. The proposal mirrors the style already seen on Dortmund’s 2025-26 cup kit, where a retro-inspired badge is in use this season.
The proposed new BVB logo is based on the original crest from 1972, but with the deeper yellow and text of the current crest.
"We are sending a clear message to the outside world: we have a great history and are proud of what we have achieved," Renken writes in his proposal. He refers to other traditional clubs such as Ajax, AS Roma and VfB Stuttgart, which have also returned to their historic crests.
Now it’s up to the voting members on 23 November to decide whether the classic look should make a full comeback.
