This week, Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo revealed that FC Barcelona recently rejected a proposal by Nike to have a predominantly white away kit in the 2020-21 season. However, despite being the color of arch rivals Real Madrid, white is a color that has been used by the club in the past quite often - we take a look at the history of the white color used by FC Barcelona.
Barcelona Rejected White 2020-21 Away Kit Proposed by Nike
White had been used for the shorts and socks by the team from the founding year 1899 until 1910, when they switched to black shorts fforpr their Blaugrana shirt. The first away kit of the team was white, interestingly, used from 1910 to 1920, when a yellow shirt was launched.
From the late 1950s, Barcelona returned to a white away kit - They used is several times in European competitions such as the 1960 UEFA Cup final against Birmingham.
In the 1974-1975 season, the white shirt was officially abolished for the first time, precisely because of the growing rivalry against Real Madrid, when a yellow shirt with blue and red diagonal stripes was released.
However, in 1978 and 1979, the white shirt was again used for the last two times. There are no records of Barcelona ever playing an an all white uniform.
White remained in the club's jersey in detail and numbering until 1998 when Nike took over- the Swoosh started using yellow or gold in order to completely do without white, the colors of their main rivals.
