Should Bayern Lift the Ban on Blue for Their Home Kits?

After Hector Bellerin and co sported vintage Real Betis shirts recently to celebrate their Copa del Rey victory, German attacker Thomas Müller followed their example in donning a mid 90s Bayern Munich jersey for a more personal celebration, the occasion of signing his new contract with the club.

Bayern kits are not allowed to feature any colors except red and white since 2018

Bayern's history of blue and red home kits dates back to 1969 and the early 1970s.

Colors Banned Since 2018: Müller Wears Vintage Bayern Shirt

Among the last remaining one club men, Müller joined Bayern's youth team in 2000 and has been with them ever since. The photo of him wearing their 95-97 home shirt was a recreation of a photo from his childhood in which we see a young, Munich-obsessed Müller sitting on his bed, kitted out with the same shirt amongst a host of Bayern memorabilia. It's fair to say he made the right choice in dropping the goalkeeper gloves if his 224 goals for the Bavarians are anything to go by.

His new contract will see him remain at the club until 2024. A part of the first team since the 08-09 season, Müller has worn plenty of different jerseys in his career, with the 14-15 home shirt coming closest to the 95-97 kit in terms of design. Unbeknownst to him at the time, it would be the last Bayern home shirt he would wear to feature blue so prominently, as the club decided in 2018 to use only red and white for their home kits going forward.

Although the decision came as a result of fan protests, it is something of a shame from a neutral's point of view, as the blue and red striped kits were some of Bayern's best of their respective decades, giving the club an alternative to repetitive red kits with a splash of white trim. At least they were able to use this opportunity to break out one of their more colorful jerseys.

Are Adidas running out of ideas?

Indeed, the Bayern home kits have become less and less popular among kit fans in the past years, with the 22-23 home kit being the most unpopular Bayern kit ever on Football Kit Archive.

For Adidas, Bayern's decision to have red and white only is not favorable. The decision was forced by the club's die-hard fans, possibly also because of the navy shorts of the 2018-19 home kit. We think many ordinary Bayern fans would love to see more variety with the kits.
