Full Adidas Copa History - 1979-2018

Adidas this week released the all-new next-generation of the Adidas Copa football boot, including the first-ever laceless version of the silo. The Three Stripes will also equip some of their best players with the Adidas Copa again such as Paulo Dybala and Toni Kroos. We take a look at the full history of the Adidas Copa, beginning with the famous Adidas Copa Mundial released in 1979 for the 1982 World Cup.

1979 - Copa Mundial

The Adidas Copa Mundial (Spanish for World Cup) football boot was released in 1979. The cleats were originally made for the 1982 World Cup that took place in Spain but should have received only slight changes since then.

Made in Germany until today, the Adidas Copa Mundial has a kangaroo leather upper, a fold-over tongue and classic stud configuration. The Adidas Copa Mundial was worn by players such as Franz Beckenbauer, Zinedine Zidane, Diego Maradona, Jari Litmanen, David Backham and Oliver Kahn.

The Adidas Copa Mundial was also released as SG version, called Adidas World Cup, as well as as TF & IC edition.

2007 – Copa Mundial 25th Anniversary

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the silo, Adidas released a commemorative Copa Mundial in 2007. The kit launched included the Copa Mundial cleats with a new, blue logo on the tongue, shoe conditioner, towel, keychain and more. The 25th anniversary edition of the Adidas Copa Mundial was made in Germany, just like the original.

2013 – Copa Mundial White Edition

In 2013, Adidas released a non-black Copa Mundial for the first time in history. The white and black Adidas Copa Mundial proofed to be popular amongst fans. The white Adidas Copa marked the beginning of some future updates to the silhouette.

2014 – Copa Mundial Samba Pack

To celebrate the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, Adidas brought vibrant designs to their footwear collection. The Adidas Copa Mundial Samba pack was not a fans' favorite, in contrast to the Samba collection featuring the same colors for the Adizero, Predator & 11pro.

2016 – Copa SL

By completely redesigning the Copa in 2016, Adidas made fans really angry. The Adidas Copa SL kept elements of the classic Adidas Copa Mundial, but now featured a synthetic upper that was not wanted by fans...

2016 – Copa 17.1

In late 2016, Adidas released the new Copa 17.1, completing the shift towards a more modern Copa. The largest innovation was the new compression fit tongue while other elements were a modern SprintFrame outsole, combine with a kangaroo leather upper for ultimate comfort and touch.

2017 – Copa Gloro 17.2

Combining elements from the traditional Adidas Copa and recent Adidas Gloro models, the Adidas Copa Gloro 17.2 soccer cleats are designed for the transnationals featuring a fold-over tongue with a classic strap.

Despite Adidas already released the Adidas Copa 18.1 in December 2017, the Adidas Copa Gloro 17.2 is still being launched in new colorways until today. This could end with the release of the Adidas Copa 19, however.

2017 - Copa 18.1

The Adidas Copa 18.1 was only a slight update compared to the previous generation.

2018 – Adidas Copa Mundial Referee 2018 World Cup

For the 2018 World Cup, Adidas supplied referees with a special Copa Mundial version to celebrate the silo's 10th World Cup appearance.

December 2018 – Adidas Copa 19+ & 19.1

In December 2018, Adidas will release the all-new Adidas Copa 19+ & 19.1 football boots. The Adidas Copa 19+ is the first-ever laceless Adidas Copa (set to be worn by Dybala and other players), while the Adidas Copa 19.1 is somehow similar to the iconic Adidas 11pro boot worn by Toni Kroos (Kroos is intended by Adidas to wear the Adidas Copa 19.1) .
