Lothar Matthäus Donates Argentina 1986 World Cup Final Kit Worn by Diego Maradona

World Cup winner Lothar Matthäus recently donated the football shirt, which Diego Maradona wore in the World Cup 1986 final, to the Argentinian football association.

Lothar Matthäus and Diego Maradona knew each other and had a mutual appreciation for the creative playing style, even though Lothar Matthäus played for Germany's national team and Diego Maradona for Argentina. Funnily enough, the pair faced each other in two World Cup finals, and both won one World Cup each.

German playmaker Matthäus officially donated the shirt during a ceremony at the Argentinian embassy in Madrid in August. It is reported that Matthäus first received the match-worn Maradona World Cup 1986 football shirt at halftime of the 1986 final, which Argentina went on to win 3-2.

Matthäus claims that the Maradona World Cup 1986 football shirt belongs to the Argentinian people, and its sentimental value cannot be estimated with money.

“[The shirt is] an important armor for all of Argentine football. This shirt allowed us to hug each other when we won the title of Mexico,” added AFA president Claudio Tapia. “The value of this armor, it means a lot to our country and our history. Being here is very valuable.”

On another note, the blue away jersey Maradona wore against England in the quarter final of the same World Cup sold for £7,142,500 this year. Maradona scored the "Hand of God" goal as well as the "Goal of the Century" in said football shirt.
